Life in Korea

From 60,000 to 3 Million: What exactly happened in the alleys of Seongsu-dong?

A story beyond the 'Brooklyn of Seoul' through the eyes of the SEDA team

A neighborhood where foreign visitors exploded 50-fold in just six years. We share the transformation of Seongsu-dong—from a quasi-industrial zone to the heart of a tourist mecca—through the daily perspective of the SEDA team.

Introduction

It’s been several months since I started commuting to Seongsu-dong. Every morning, I walk past red brick buildings to the office, and for lunch, I find a spot in a familiar alleyway restaurant. But lately, I often get a strange, unfamiliar feeling on my way home. When I reflexively take off my earbuds, the sounds surrounding me aren't Korean. I hear Japanese, English, Chinese, and languages I can’t even identify. It’s a surreal experience—feeling like a stranger in what used to be just an ordinary Korean neighborhood. Why is the whole world so obsessed with these old factory alleys?

A Scene Unrecognizable from 10 Years Ago

Seongsu-dong wasn't always home to pretty cafes. It was a quasi-industrial area filled with the hum of machinery and the smell of leather. A conversation with our team over lunch really brought home how much things have changed.

Denver (Developer): "Seongsu 10 years ago? Man, it’s changed beyond recognition. I think that weirdly cool 'vibe'—created by the old factories tucked in between high-rises—is what gives Seongsu its edge. We originally set up shop here because it’s an industrial zone, but now it feels less like commuting and more like being 'summoned' to the heart of a global hotspot every single day."

As Denver noted, the charm of Seongsu-dong lies in its "unerasable traces." While other neighborhoods tore down the old to build the new, Seongsu-dong kept the skeletons of the factories and filled them with new culture. This jarring combination of weathered brick walls and cutting-edge pop-up stores is what foreigners perceive as "the most Korean, yet the hippest" scenery. Those who truly know how to enjoy Seongsu-dong embrace this "contrast." They might spend their morning sipping a bold espresso in a cafe converted from an old warehouse, then spend the afternoon exploring a glamorous pop-up store by a global brand in the very next building. When the crowded alleys start to feel a bit much, they head to "Seoul Forest," just a five-minute walk away. The sight of a massive green space—like New York's Central Park—right next to a jungle of skyscrapers and factories is the dramatic twist that makes the Seongsu experience complete.

Explosive Growth Proven by Numbers

This phenomenon isn't just a feeling; the numbers back it up. In 2018, only about 60,000 foreigners visited Seongsu-dong. By 2024, that number skyrocketed to over 3 million—a 50-fold increase in just six years 1 2. It’s no longer surprising to hear that half the customers at a local Olive Young are tourists 3. The reason Seongsu-dong isn't just a "one-time visit" destination is its incredible pace.

While Myeong-dong or Insadong preserve Korea's traditional charm, Seongsu-dong showcases "Korea in this very moment" with dozens of pop-up stores opening and closing every week. A shop you visited this week might be gone by the next, replaced by an entirely new brand. This sense of scarcity—the feeling that "if I don't go now, I'll miss it"—is what keeps drawing people back to these alleys.

Why SEDA is Waiting for You in Seongsu-dong

SEDA chose to settle in Seongsu-dong because of this unique energy. Just like this neighborhood where industrial heritage and future technology coexist, SEDA wants to be the bridge that supports your dream of coming to Korea with the most modern technology.

Some of you might take your first steps in Korea at a workshop or factory right here in Seongsu-dong. When that day comes, the view you see won't just be a place of hard work. It will also be a "dream destination" that others long to visit—a place where Korea’s past and present meet most passionately.

To prepare for that exciting future, why not master one more Korean sentence with SEDA today? Until the day you can naturally order at a Seongsu-dong cafe and hang out with Korean friends, the SEDA team will be right here in these alleys, cheering you on.
